If you are like 50% of Americans your New year's resolution is to loose weight and get in shape. However, only a small percentage of people actually reach their fitness goals. Most start off on track, they join a health club and workout 3-4 times per week. They even start to see results. Then it happens, their progress slows down, they get frustrated and the next thing you know they are only working out a couple times a month or not at all.
Everyone that joins a health club has great intentions and they are motivated. They walk into a health club, look at all the equipment and they do not know where to begin. There is a way to prevent this from happeing, hire a personal trainer. Here are some reasons why a good personal trainer can help you succeed:
Personal trainers can put together a personalized exercise program for you.
Personal trainers can show you how to do exercises correctly.
Personal trainers can motivate you to workout.
Personal trainers can spot you on exercises to keep you safe.
Personal trainers can help you develop a diet plan.
Personal trainers can keep track of your fitness program.
Personal trainers can constantly change your exercise program so you don't hit a plateau.
When looking to hire a personal trainer there are many factors to consider. Anyone can get certified to become a personal trainer. Just because someone is certified doesn't mean they are good at what they do. Obviously, you want your trainer to be certified but there are more important factors when selecting a trainer,
such as:
1. Formal education is very important. A trainer who has a BS or MS in exercise science has more knowledge about the anatomy and physiology of the human body and how it reacts to exercise.
2. Experience is one of the most important factors. A personal trainer with at least 5 years experience should have the knowledge to help you succeed. The trainers should also have a list of past and present clients that you could speak with to see if the clients were happy with their results and the trainers knowledge and abilities.
3. Certification: Who your trainer is certified through does make a difference. Like described earlier anyone can pass a test over the weekend to become a trainer but some certifications are more extensive then others. Some of the better certifications are: ACE, ACSM, ISSA, NSCS and there are many more. You can go online to research where your trainer is certified through and what there requirements are.
4. Trainer looks the part: You probably want a trainer who practices what they preach. Make sure the trainer you are considering is in good shape.
5. Personailty: You want to make sure you are compatible with this individual and that you enjoy their company.
These are all factors when looking for a personal trainer. Even though your workouts can be tough,
they shouldn't be miserable. Most trainers should offer a complimentary training session to all potential clients. This way you will have a better idea of what a trainer can do for you. Good luck!
